File # 2019-1000

On April 10, 2019 at approximately 8:50 PM New Hazelton RCMP and Emergency Services responded to a serious collision on Highway 16 about 15 kilometres east of New Hazelton.

Upon arrival it was determined that an east bound pickup truck with a lone female occupant crossed the centre line and side-swiped a west bound transport truck. The driver of the pickup truck sustained serious, but non-life threatening injuries and the transport truck driver was uninjured.

Police were able to determine that the driver of the pickup truck was distracted by her cell phone and was issued a ticket for driving without consideration which carries a fine of $196 and 6 points.

The highway was closed to traffic as police investigated and made the road safe for travel. The highway is fully re-opened.

This is reminder to all motorists about the dangers of distracted driving which is responsible for killing 78 people in BC every year. The outcome of this collision could have been far worse. Police urge all motorists to drive defensively, obey speed limits, wear seatbelts, and drive sober and distraction-free every time you get behind the wheel.
